The title comes from a Rolling Stones song but that is where the similarities here end. I am reminded of a training CD I got with a time management system I once used. It began with 2 questions:
1. What time is it? and 2. Time, what is it? The CD went on to explore the differences in the two questions, the first being quite simple to answer but the second one gives us something to think about and that is what I would like to write about here.
Time can be described in many ways, usually as different as each individual. We all have the same 24 hours in a day but how we use them is what describes time for us. It defines our priorities. It explains our situation. It tells others what we think of them, whether we place high importance on them. My feeling is that how we spend out time is a direct correlation of who we are. Are we business owners? Employees? Husbands? Fathers? the list could go on for ever and interestingly enough, it can change on a regular basis.
Let's put it in simply terms, how you spend your time in any given moment determines your focus and goals for that same given moment. Right now, I am spending time writing this because I want to establish myself and develop a following as a writer. Later on today, I'll go to my corporate job where I work 40 hours a week and I'll spend my time there as an employee for corporate america for the purpose of paying the bills and making my wife happy. It stands to reason then that the answer to my question: Time, what is it? would follow along the lines of: Time is a tool by which we divide our resources to accomplish or goals.
So, if that is the case, are you making the best use of those resources? We often read or hear that a well balanced life entails goals is all areas of life:
Spiritual
Emotional and physical health
Relationships
Work
Service/Giving back
Fun/leisure
Divide your time wisely and consider all the above areas. Perhaps not on a daily basis, but at least weekly. It's important to know where our time goes, if it is not spent wisely (do you watch too much TV? I know I do!) it may be time to re-evaluate not only your goals but how you spend your time as well. I know I am all too guilty of spending my time unwisely, not focused on my goals. My Goals Master Mind group and accountability partner helps me with that.
